ABOUT THIS SESSION:
The Laurier community has been making strides toward increased awareness and action on gender-based violence. Many of us have heard about the work of the Gendered Violence Taskforce, The Change Project, the Bringing in the Bystander program, and other activity at Laurierand in the broader community, but we not all have had the opportunity to learn more about what’s happening, and how we can integrate this knowledge into our roles as educators and mentors, managers and colleagues.
This session brings together several speakers who have been active in these initiatives to offer a brief overview and discussion. The goal of this session is to provide a manageable “short-format” gathering for maximum accessibility. For some, it will be an opportunity to get better informed and gain some practical knowledge of campus resources. For others, it can be a first step toward becoming more deeply involved. It’s also an opportunity to express your perspective and engage in some discussion as we move forward.
PRESENTERS:
Lynn Kane
Acting Manager, Diversity and Equity Office
Lynn will present some of the work of the Diversity and Equity Office in relation to supporting women, LGBTQ students, and students of colour who face gendered violence as well as the work of the Gendered Violence Taskforce. She will discuss what spurred the formation of the taskforce, who is involved, and what the group’s goals are. Through doing this she hopes to also bring to the group ways they can be involved, or things they can do through their own work to support students and each other.
Adria Joel
Project Coordinator, Social Innovation Research Group
Adria will briefly outline the main findings and recommendations from The Change Project, a comprehensive needs assessment of gendered violence on campus, conducted by the Social Innovation Research Group (SIRG) in partnership with the Sexual Assault Support Centre (SASC). She will also discuss one of the actions that came out of The Change Project, the implementation of the Bringing in the Bystander program at Laurier.
Joan Tuchlinsky
Public Education Manager, Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region
Joan will share about the services her agency provides to survivors and their families and friends, as well as the prevention work done in collaboration with the community. This includes the Male Allies Against Sexual Violence (MAASV) program.
