Topic: Negotiating Care and Work – From Parenting to Elder Care and In Between

The challenges of managing or integrating work and care has been an issue that has received extensive research attention and is a subject of multiple conversations at home, at work, and among public policy makers. Decisions about how many children to have and how they will be cared for, how to manage work responsibilities and support family members who have a disability or serious illness, and how to combine work and care for an aging parent are not only matters of personal concern, but affect employers, co-workers and public costs. Universities are unique workplaces in which these concerns play out somewhat differently for faculty, staff and students. This session provides a summary of current research on how public policies and workplace practices can better meet the needs of a diverse workforce and support a healthy integration of our key life roles.
About Dr. Lero:
Donna Lero is a Professor in Family Relations and Applied Nutrition at the University of Guelph and is the Jarislowsky Chair in Families and Work. She co-founded the University’s Centre for Families, Work and Well-Being, where she leads a program of research on public policies, workplace practices and community supports. Her current research focuses on the need for comprehensive supports for caregivers of adult and elder family members with disabilities or chronic health conditions.
Donna has authored or co-authored over 30 major reports and book chapters on a range of topics related to work and caregiving across the life course including parental leave, child care quality, parents of children with disabilities, and flexible work arrangements. She is co-editor of the 2008 Handbook of Work-Family Integration: Research, Theory, and Best Practices. Her recent research focuses on understanding caregiving and work challenges from the perspectives of employees, employers and managers. Dr. Lero provides consultation and support through her role on task forces and advisory committees at the federal and provincial levels, and is well known as a speaker at national and international conferences, as well as regional employer roundtables. In 2012, she was the lead researcher on a study of The Availability, Accessibility and Effectiveness of Workplace Supports for Canadian Caregivers.
