Program Prioritization: the Ontario Experience
Laurier’s Integrated Program and Resource Management (IPRM) is one example of a wider provincial initiative in “Program Prioritization” being undertaken by a number of universities. The Laurier Brantford panel, An Outside Perspective on the IPRM, brought faculty from three universities together in January 2014 to share their experiences, strategies and understanding of this initiative.
The discussion, captured in the following six-part video, is kicked off by the Ontario Colleges and University Faculty Association President Kate Lawson. Dr. Lawson suggests that Program Prioritization – which is encouraged but not mandated by the government – is part of a wider provincial effort to find savings in education through greater differentiation. She notes, however, that Ontario universities are already organically differentiated, having developed in response to the needs of local communities.
Following Dr. Lawson, Brock University Faculty Association President Linda Rose-Krasnor, and University of Guelph Association Chief Negotiator Scott Gillies and Vice-President Bill Cormack recount the faculty response to their administrations’ efforts to impose an IPRM-like process. The panel concludes with a broad discussion of possible faculty-based responses and strategies.
