Urgent Action Appeal: Protest the abduction and assassination of Mexican students
The Canadian Association of University Teachers is urging members to sign an open letter protesting the kidnapping and assassination of college students by police in Guerrero, Mexico.
“The Federal Attorney General of Mexico must launch a prompt, full and impartial investigation into the brutal killing and abduction of students,” said CAUT executive director David Robinson. “Given the allegations of possible links between criminal groups and the Guerrero State Attorney General’s office, it is essential that the Federal office take responsibility for the investigation.”
According to Amnesty International, on September 26 police patrols from the Municipality of Iguala fired upon and attacked a group of students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Teacher Training College, killing at least 6 and wounding up to 20. Forty-three others are missing.
On October 5, officials found six unmarked mass graves near Iguala. At least 28 bodies have been exhumed, but it is not yet clear if the bodies of those are of the abducted students.
The open letter to Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and interim Guerrero State Governor Rogelio Ortega urges authorities to take immediate measures to locate the missing students and to bring those responsible for the killings and kidnappings to justice.
