Please find attached and below OCUFA’s statement, in English and French, in support for the Scholar Strike Canada for racial and social justice, taking place on September 9th and 10th, 2020.
As noted in the statement, while many OCUFA members are unable to legally strike during the length of their contract, OCUFA encourages faculty associations and their members to engage with the public digital teach-ins and other activities organized by #ScholarStrikeCanada in ways that reflect their ability to participate.

Statement in support of the scholar strike for racial justice
September 3, 2020
OCUFA supports the Scholar Strike for racial justice, an end to anti-Black police violence and anti-Indigenous colonial violence which will take place on September 9-10 in Canada.
While many OCUFA members are unable to legally strike during the length of their contract, we encourage faculty, academic librarians, and other staff to join the public digital teach-ins and other events being organized by #ScholarStrikeCanada against racist, institutional, and systemic forms of violence and to learn more about the demands of #ScholarStrikeCanada.
OCUFA condemns institutionalized racism and racist policing that inflict violence on Black, Indigenous, and other racialized communities across Ontario and the rest of Turtle Island. We extend our solidarity to Black, Indigenous, and other racialized communities that are subjected to this loss and trauma.
We echo the call of the #ScholarStrikeCanada organizers who “believe that it’s of crucial importance for those of us in higher education to take a stand in solidarity with our students and the communities we serve [and]…affirm protestors, workers for social justice, and activists who are crucial parts of making our communities safer places.”
We also call on university administrators to support faculty, librarians, other staff, and students participating in these actions and not penalize those who do. With over half of Ontario university courses taught by contract faculty, OCUFA acknowledges the precarious employment status of many academic staff and supports the #ScholarStrikeCanada organizers’ call for individuals to participate in ways that mirror their capacity to engage.
OCUFA is committed to working internally and externally to end racism and systemic discrimination. At universities across Ontario, Black, Indigenous, and racialized faculty, librarians, staff, and students bear the burden of systemic discrimination and of combating it. The OCUFA Executive is committed to examining and reimagining OCUFA’s structures to make them more representative and inclusive, and to effect systemic changes that support our racialized colleagues and students. This important work is ongoing.

Déclaration de l’OCUFA pour le soutien de la grève des universitaires pour la justice raciale

L’OCUFA appuie la grève des universitaires pour la justice sociale, qui vise à mettre fin à la violence policière contre les Noirs et à la violence coloniale contre les Autochtones. Cette grève aura lieu les 9 et 10 septembre au Canada.
Bien qu’il soit légalement impossible à de nombreux membres de l’OCUFA de faire la grève pendant la durée de leur contrat, nous encourageons les professeurs, les bibliothécaires universitaires et d’autres membres du personnel à se joindre aux séances d’information numériques publiques, ainsi qu’à d’autres activités qui sont organisées par #ScholarStrikeCanada contre les formes de violence racistes, institutionnelles et systémiques, ainsi qu’à se renseigner sur les revendications de #ScholarStrikeCanada.
L’OCUFA condamne le racisme institutionnalisé et le maintien de l’ordre raciste qui inflige de la violence aux communautés noires, autochtones et à d’autres communautés racialisées dans toutes les régions de l’Ontario et ailleurs dans l’île de la Tortue. Nous sommes solidaires des communautés noires, autochtones et des autres communautés racialisées qui subissent ces pertes et ces traumatismes.
Nous faisons écho à l’appel des organisateurs de #ScholarStrikeCanada qui « croient qu’il est d’une importance capitale pour les personnes parmi nous au sein de l’enseignement supérieur d’être solidaires avec nos étudiants et avec les communautés que nous desservons [et]… de soutenir les manifestants, les travailleurs pour la justice sociale et les militants qui jouent un rôle prépondérant dans la sécurisation de nos communautés. » (Traduction)
Nous demandons également aux administrateurs des universités de soutenir les professeurs, les bibliothécaires et les autres membres du personnel et les étudiants qui participent à ces actions et de ne pas les pénaliser pour leur participation. Puisque plus de la moitié des cours d’université en Ontario sont donnés par des professeurs contractuels, l’OCUFA reconnaît la précarité de la situation d’emploi de nombreux membres du personnel universitaire et appuie l’appel des organisateurs qui veulent que les individus participent de manière à refléter leur capacité à s’engager.
L’OCUFA s’est engagée à travailler, tant au sein de son organisation qu’en dehors, pour mettre fin au racisme et à la discrimination systémique. Dans les universités de l’Ontario, les professeurs, les bibliothécaires, le personnel et les étudiants noirs, autochtones et racialisés portent le fardeau de la discrimination systémique et de la lutte contre celle-ci. Le comité de direction de l’OCUFA s’est engagé à examiner et à réimaginer les structures de l’OCUFA pour les rendre plus représentatives et plus inclusives et pour provoquer les changements systémiques qui soutiennent nos collègues et nos étudiants racialisés. Ce travail important est en évolution constante.
